"Callie loves color, drama, and something surprising and unique," prefaces designer Bailey Austin Bird of Bailey Austin Design while describing her inspiration for the Oklahoma home her client shares with her husband and 2-year-old son. Think wild patterns, mixed metals, funky wallpaper, and all the colors of the rainbow: Seems like overkill, right?

Well, it turns out that isn't the case at all. "There's a way to combine color and pattern in a way that's more elevated," explains Bird, who also did the architecture in the house. She focused on the outdoor space as much as she did on the interiors, making sure that the natural light emphasized the different colors in the design. For instance, the dining room looks out over to the pool through the large windows, and the forest green curtains further highlight that connection to the outdoors.

"I think that was one way we could balance out the color and texture," elaborates Bird. "By focusing on an indoor-outdoor feel, we could have areas that were wild and crazy, but the outdoor space takes away some of that focus."

That's half the fun of the home—the homeowner didn't settle for playing it safe. She loved bold colors and wasn't afraid to use them; they were just strategic about pairing them. Colors of similar undertones were combined together, while only a few patterned rugs or upholstery were added for a "pop" effect. This is especially evident in the library/office area, where the greens and blues of the wild rug complement the metals and furniture, and in the kids' playroom, where the green wall trim matches the curtains, rug, and sofa.

"It's playful, yet elegant," says Bird of her color choices, which emphasize using one element as a jumping-off point for future design decisions.

It's important to note, though, that the exterior did not receive the same colorful treatment—and for good reason. "Had we used a lot of color, it would have taken away from the architecture of the house and the landscaping," explains Bird. "Instead, we wanted it to tie into the overall exterior of the house, which is white with black accents."

As so much of the home overlooks the pool and lounge area out back, having something more subtle to balance the color on the inside makes sense. But that doesn't mean Bird didn't have any fun while designing the area: Striped patterns, marble, and a warm fireplace all make an appearance in the space, which works as a fun area to entertain as well.

In fact, the couple loves to have people over, which is why having wide open spaces in the home was key. It was a challenge for Bird to infuse those areas with personality without overwhelming them, as they had to work for groups. However, where there's a will, there's a way. Bird especially loves the all-blue prep kitchen and what she refers to as the "adult playroom"—"We should all have one!" she laughs.

These are the primary entertaining areas in the home, so Bird made sure to add some dramatic touches through more unique ways—like tons of artwork in the game room, multiple shades of the same hue in the prep kitchen, and funky upholstery in the main kitchen.

"Also, the light fixtures throughout the home are like jewelry," she gushes. "We wanted each space to feel special and unique. You really travel from one space to another—it's a true procession through the home, allowing you to discover something new in each space. The overall white backdrop of the home gave us a great balance to introduce something new without feeling overdone."

Another easy way to add personality to a home without having to completely commit? Wallpaper, wallpaper, wallpaper. Bird had a ton of fun adding it all over, from the ceiling in the dining room to dedicated spots in the bathroom and powder room.

She even used the same pattern for both the curtains and wallpaper in the master bedroom: "It has such a tranquil feel to it. So, by keeping the color palette neutral, we could balance the bold pattern," she says. The other, wilder wallpaper was reserved for relatively smaller spaces, so as to not overwhelm the entire home.

However, if you're still struggling with adding some personality to your space, Bird suggests throwing all caution to the wind and just going for it, whatever "it" may be: "Be confident in yourself, and bold!" she advises. "Your home is a direct representation of you, and playing it safe doesn't always bode well for a forever home."
